{"id":1,"date":"2012-03-30T18:53:34","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T18:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simcobox.com\/blog\/?p=1"},"modified":"2015-01-02T02:24:49","modified_gmt":"2015-01-02T02:24:49","slug":"the-ul-standars-at-simco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.simcobox.com\/blog\/the-ul-standars-at-simco\/","title":{"rendered":"The UL standards and SIMCO enclosures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you order enclosures from simcobox.com, you are given a choice of UL or non-UL materials.\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0 In fact, all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simcobox.com\/\" rel='nofollow' >SIMCO<\/a> enclosures are made of materials that meet flammability standards released by Underwriters Laboratories of the USA, but the ones that are labeled UL and have a prefix of UL before the part number are tested to a stricter standard.<\/p>\n<p>UL 94 is the Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances.\u00a0 In the test, a sample is held in either a vertical or horizontal position depending on which specification must be met.\u00a0 A flame is applied for a specific amount of time, and the time that it takes for the flame to extinguish itself is measured.<\/p>\n<p>SIMCO\u2019s UL rated materials are tested to the 94V0 specification for flame resistance.\u00a0 This means that after a flame is applied, burning stops within 10 seconds on a vertical specimen.\u00a0 The specification also requires that no flaming drips be produced that ignite a cotton indicator placed below the test sample.\u00a0 In the test, the flame is applied twice.<\/p>\n<p>Standard enclosure materials are tested to 94HB. HB stands for Horizontal Burn.\u00a0 To meet this standard, a sample less than 3mm thick must burn at a rate less than 76 mm per minute.<\/p>\n<p>SIMCO uses POLYLAC\u00ae PA-765\u2028CHI MEI CORPORATION &#8211; Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS plastic) for UL rated boxes.
